Garage Golf Simulator: What to Know Before You Build

The garage is the #1 spot people turn into a golf simulator, and for good reason: it's usually the biggest open space in the house, and nobody's mad if you leave gear set up. But garages come with their own quirks, so let me save you some headaches.

First, look up. Garage ceilings can be lower than you'd think, and if you've got a garage-door track or opener hanging down, that eats into your swing space. Measure your true ceiling height first — it's the make-or-break number — and factor in anything bolted up there.

Then think about temperature. A garage in a Tennessee July is a sauna, and a garage in January is a meat locker. If you want to actually use your bay year-round (and you do — that's the whole point), a mini-split heat-and-AC unit is worth every penny. It's the difference between a room you love and a room you avoid nine months a year.

Mind the floor. Concrete is hard, cold, and unforgiving. A good hitting mat and some surrounding turf or flooring make the space feel finished and save your joints. Bonus: it looks a hundred times better than raw concrete in photos when you inevitably show it off.

Handle the light. Garages often have one sad overhead bulb and maybe a bright window. You want to control the light — enough to see, but not so much that it washes out your projector image. A little planning here is the difference between a crisp, TV-like picture and a washed-out ghost of a fairway.

And plan your power. Garages sometimes run on a single circuit that's already busy with the fridge, the freezer, and the opener. Your projector, PC, and monitor want reliable, ideally dedicated power so nothing flickers or trips mid-round.

None of this is a dealbreaker — garages make fantastic sim rooms, and it's probably my favorite space to build in. You just want to plan for the quirks instead of discovering them after the screen's already up.

Thinking about converting your garage? I've built plenty and I know exactly what to plan for. Book a free consultation and let's map it out.
