Two different jobs
Artificial putting green installation, inside and out
They look like the same product. They are not the same build.
Backyard putting greens
A green you'll actually use is mostly what's underneath it. Excavation, a compacted base, and drainage that moves Tennessee rain off it instead of through the middle of it — then the turf, the cups and the contours that make it worth practicing on. Most people are surprised how much of this job is dirt work. That's also why cheap greens go bad in year two.
Indoor putting turf
Putting turf in a sim room, a basement or a hallway. Level, seamed so you can't find the joins, and rolling at a speed close to what you putt on at your course. Practicing on turf that runs slow makes you worse, not better — so the speed is part of the spec, not an afterthought.
Turf inside the hitting bay
The landing area takes more abuse than anything else in the room. I build the hitting surface to take a real strike, sit flush with the floor, and stay put through a winter of practice instead of creeping out from under you.
What's in it
What an artificial turf installation includes
Two thirds of this list happens before any turf comes off the roll.
- Site walk and measurementYou find out what your yard or room can really hold before you commit to a size.
- Excavation and gradingWater ends up where you want it instead of pooling in the middle of your green.
- Compacted baseThe layer that decides whether it's still flat in five years. This is where the money goes.
- Drainage built for Tennessee rainIt dries out and stays playable instead of turning into a sponge every spring.
- Turf seamed and securedNo visible joins, and no edges lifting on you the first hot week.
- Contours and breaksReal slope you have to read, so the practice actually carries over to the course.
- Cups and flags setPositioned so you can move the challenge around as you get better.
- Fringe, edging and cleanupA clean edge that holds its shape, and a site left the way you'd want it left.

Outside, we look at slope, drainage and sun. Inside, we look at the floor and how level it really is. You get a straight answer on what's possible.

Design the shape and the breaks
How many holes, where they sit, and how much break you want to read. This is the fun part and it costs nothing to change on paper.
-
3
Base and drainage first
Excavate, grade, drain, compact. It's the least exciting day of the job and the one that decides how it plays in five years.

4
Turf, cups, cleanup
Turf laid, seamed and secured, cups set, edges finished, site cleaned. Then I show you how to keep it looking new.
The gear side
Doing it yourself? I stock turf and hitting mats too.
If you'd rather buy the material and lay it yourself, buy it here and ask me questions along the way.

Putting green and turf installation questions
It's quoted per square foot, and the base work drives the number more than the turf does. A small two-hole green is a different job from a thousand square feet with bunkers and heavy contour. Give me the rough size you're after and I'll get you a real number.
Good turf on a good base lasts a long time outdoors under normal use. Bad base work shows up in year two as low spots that hold water. That's the whole reason I spend the money underneath it.
Yes, and it's one of the most common add-ons I do. Most people build a hitting bay first and then realize they'd putt a lot more if the surface were already there.
Usually yes. Turf and its base change how water moves across that exact spot. Building it in is cheap. Fixing it after the fact means pulling the green back up.
Far less than grass, but it isn't zero. Blowing off leaves and brushing the pile back up now and then keeps it rolling true. I'll show you exactly what to do before I leave.
Got a yard you're not sure about? Text me a photo and the rough dimensions.
Next step
Send me the size of your yard and I'll give you a number.
Rough dimensions and a photo is usually enough to get you a ballpark before I ever drive out.
